The Boston University women’s cross country team performed well at the Dartmouth Invitational Saturday in Hanover, N.H., tying Dartmouth College for third with 75 points.
Brown University and Northeastern University claimed the first and second spots, respectively.
The Terriers’ third-place finish was backed by a first-place effort from junior Erin Lagasse. She beat out 75 other runners to finish the 5-kilometer course in 19:53.8.
Lagasse was the only runner to finish in less than 20 minutes.
“I thought that Erin Lagasse looked very good,” BU coach Bruce Lehane said. “She took the lead early on and was never passed.”
Several other BU athletes registered excellent times. Freshman Katie Matthews finished 11th in her first-ever meet at the collegiate level, while fellow freshman Molly James came in 13th in her own collegiate debut.
“Katie Matthews ran quite well for a freshman,” Lehane said. “Molly James also did a great job.”
Junior co-captains Mollie Zapata and Sarah Mosser, who finished 23rd and 27th, respectively, were the last two Terriers to finish in scoring position.
Other BU finishers included sophomore Courtney Gardner (30th) and freshmen Amanda Solly (48th), Anna Lukes (53rd) and Madeline Steiner (64th).
All runners had to overcome the humid conditions and a daunting hill two miles into the race.
“[The hill] made it difficult for anyone who was fading towards the end of the race,” Lehane said.
The meet was a solid starting point for the Terriers, who resume action this Saturday at the Ted Owen Invitational at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, Conn.
