Approximately 400 students packed the 1019 Commonwealth Ave. lounge for Student Union-sponsored free pizza and soda last night after Boston University hockey’s 3-1 loss to Boston College.
Students left happy, after finishing off the 122 pizzas ordered for the event. Besides free pizza and soda, the BU pep band played a repertoire of hockey songs for the crowd, including the song correlated with the infamous BC chant and BU’s fight song.
Many of the students at the event said they were disappointed by the loss but glad to get some free food afterward.
‘I’m glad it’s free, but I am mad that BC won,’ said Ash Shah, a College of Arts and Sciences freshman.
‘I appreciated this,’ CAS freshman Suraj Parekh said. ‘Our tuition is finally paying off I was waiting for something like this.’
Other students were glad to see the Student Union organizing events that bring together the student population and create more of a community feeling.
‘I think it is phenomenal that they got everyone together,’ said CAS freshman David Weinshel. ‘It was a tough loss, they should go back to Newton.’
‘It’s great,’ said second-year Graduate School of Management student Gordan Sinclair. ‘[The event] builds school spirit.’
Union president Ethan Clay said the event was aimed at doing just that.
‘Regardless of the loss, we wanted to celebrate BU’s spirit,’ Clay said. ‘We’re bringing this new pride back to BU.’
Clay said the idea for the event was conceived during last year’s Student Union executive board campaign, when his ‘True’ slate ran on the idea. Union officials have been planning the event since late December, when the Senate’s Student Activities Committee resurrected the idea.
Student Activities committee chairman Erik Dawson (West Campus) said the event was planned around the BC game because there would be more students to attend the event and recognize who had planned the event.
‘BU-BC is a very big game,’ Dawson said. ‘It was specifically after the BC game so that [students] would see that the Student Union does care.’
The event cost approximately $1,200 for pizza and soda, according to Union officials. Advertisements for the event included flyers on all of the chairs at Walter Brown Arena and announcements throughout the game, Dawson said.
Clay also said this event was the first of a series that will celebrate the BU spirit and attempt to get students together and create more of a community on-campus. Such events include a Spring festival which will be organized by many of the student organizations on campus, he said.
