The Place The salon that helped us out with this makeover was Dellaria Salon, 623 Commonwealth Ave., located in the center of Boston University’s campus how convenient! Entering the salon, the aroma of shampoos, conditioners, hair dye and nail polish hit you. You are immediately greeted by the friendly staff that direct you to where you’re supposed to be. The bottom three levels of the salon are used for hair styling, i.e. cutting, washing, coloring, etc. The third level has tanning beds and suites for skin care. The top floor is nail care used for manicures and pedicures. The whole salon has a very comfortable feel to it with the many fireplaces and exposed brick, it feels very homey.
The Victim Aubrey Hooser, a junior in the University Professors Program and an RA at the UNI house, was our victim for this week’s makeover madness. Aubrey is an amazing person and she wanted hair to match. So what did she do? She came to the style gurus at The Muse for some hair repair. Aubrey had long, wavy, bleached-out hair that reached her mid-back. Her naturally wavy hair was damaged at the ends, making it look super fine. Aubrey was looking for a new style that would work both with curly and straight hair, as she often lets her hair air-dry. Thank goodness that she was completely open to change now that’s the kind of girl we’re on the lookout for!
The Rescuer Leah Andrews, a Designer Stylist at Dellaria has been working at the salon for about five years. Leah went to Blaine School of Beauty and, upon her acceptance to Dellaria, was further trained by a specific program in which all Dellaria stylists must participate. To say the least, this gal knows what she’s doing. Leah had many ideas for Aubrey’s soon-to-be-luscious locks. First she wanted to take up the length and tone down the color. She also kept in mind that Aubrey almost never blows out her hair, so she wanted to create a style that would be low maintenance and still look incredibly fab.
The Process Within no time Aubrey said goodbye to seven inches of hair she had been growing for years. Hurrah for Aubrey that took guts! Leah then went on to make preliminary cuts to Aubrey’s hair. Next, Leah mixed up two Redken permanent and demi-permanent hair colors. She foiled Aubrey’s hair with a rich blond that will stay in Aubrey’s hair for 10 to 11 weeks with no maintenance required. Between the foils, Leah applied a deep reddish-brown that will gradually fade, blending nicely with the blond highlights. After 20 minutes, the color was ready to come out, so Leah washed out the dye with a color-treated shampoo and two Biogenol conditioners. No toner was necessary in this coloring process because Aubrey felt comfortable with her bold new colors. Now, back to the cut: Leah continued to cut Aubrey’s hair, creating angles around her face and disconnective layers that would enhance the curls without making the actual layers of the hair too short. After she was finished, Leah applied Matrix Sleek Lock Smoothing Systems to the hair before blowing it out. When it was completely dry, Leah lightly sprayed Aubrey’s hair with Sebation’s Shaper Plus and followed that with a ceramic flattening iron. (Ceramic irons heat up quicker and stay hot plus they’re better for your locks.) After Aubrey’s hair was pin straight, and I mean pin straight, Leah took thinning shears to blend the layers of Aubrey’s hair. The result? Aubrey, a beautiful girl to begin with, now has luscious completely straight, chunky blond/reddish-brown hair with disconnected angled layers. Leah, you did an amazing job you’re a truly gifted artist.
