Provost to step down; search for replacement commences

Boston University Provost David Campbell will be stepping down from his position in order to focus on research and a return to teaching, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Campbell announced his resignation in a joint email with President Robert Brown that was sent to BU faculty members Tuesday night.

“Over the past year, I have had many conversations &- with President Brown, my family and others &- about my own long-term goals and plans,” Campbell wrote in the email.

“After much careful thought and deliberation, I have concluded that I cannot in good faith make the long-term commitment that Boston University needs from those going forward in senior leadership roles.”

Campbell will continue serving as provost while the university conducts a search for his replacement, said BU spokesman Colin Riley.

“The president asked him to continue as university provost until the search is conducted for his successor and he’s happy to do that,” Riley said.

In the email, Brown said the university will be working to find a successor to Campbell.

“We will [find a replacement] using a distinguished search consultant and working consultatively to solicit input and advice and to review candidates,” he said.

“It is my goal to find a distinguished scholar and researcher with extensive senior leadership experience so that we will have a seamless transition and continue to move the university forward.”

Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore praised Campbell’s service to the university throughout his five years as provost.

“Dr. Campbell is an eclectic man . . .What’s wonderful about him is he knows students well and understands what students can be inspired by,” Elmore said. “He really pushed forward thinking about undergraduate education with One BU. . .He is leaving us a great set of talking points.”

Milestones of Campbell’s tenure include the implementation of recommendations from the Council on Faculty Diversity and Inclusion and work on One BU initiatives, including the University Honors College.

As provost, Campbell was considered the chief academic officer at BU, and was responsible for overseeing all of the university’s academic and budget policies, according to the Office of the Provost website. Before his appointment as provost in 2005, Campbell served as dean of the College of Engineering.
