The last time the Boston University women’s basketball team faced off against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, the Terriers came away with their most disappointing loss of the season &- a 65-63 heartbreaker at home. Tonight at 7 p.m., BU will travel to Maryland looking for a much better result.
The late-January loss marked the only time this season that BU (14-12, 10-4 America East) has lost to an AE team ranked below the top-two. Coming off its first conference loss in over a year in a match against the University of Hartford, BU looked flat and failed in its second-half comeback against a resilient UMBC (12-5, 6-8) squad.
BU coach Kelly Greenberg’s squad will look to avoid falling into a similar trap this time around. The setup is similar &- the Terriers’ previous match featured BU’s lowest -scoring output of the season, a 61-38 thrashing by Hartford.
BU’s outside shooting has normally been reliable this season. Their average of 65.3 points per game ranks second in AE, and three Terrier guards rank in the top-10 in scoring: sophomore Alex Young, and freshmen Chantell Alford and Mo Moran.
More will be asked from the forwards, however. The core three of senior Aly Hinton, junior Kerry Cashman and sophomore Caroline Stewart only managed eight points collectively in the loss to Hartford. Rebounding also remains a weakness for the team. The Terriers are dead last in the conference in rebounds allowed and second to last in rebounding margin. It’s simple: too many second looks have been given to opposing players.
In their last home game of the season, the Retrievers will honor captain Carlee Cassidy, the team’s only senior. As the program’s second all-time leading scorer, she became the 30th player to score 1,500 points this season after a 12-point output versus Stony Brook University in late January. The senior guard is also a marksman from the 3-point line &- she is only the seventh player in the history of the conference to nail more than 200 3s in her career.
Cassidy’s 12.9 ppg leads her team in the scoring column. She is closely followed by sophomore Michelle Kurowski, at 12.8 points per game. Kurowski currently ranks first in the conference in free-throw percentage, a spot long occupied by the Terriers’ Hinton.
After the game, the Terriers will return home for the season finale Sunday against the University of New Hampshire. Picked to finish fourth by the preseason coaches’ poll, BU goes into the final week ranked third in the conference, with a slight shot at second.
