New England Cable News veteran Charles Kravetz has been appointed the new general manager of WBUR, Boston’s National Public Radio news station.

Kravetz, the founding news and programming director and station manager of New England Cable News, will replace Paul La Camera, who began working as general manager in 2005. Kravetz will take over on Jan. 1.

La Camera will now be taking on a two-year position as the Boston University administrator of public radio and will help manage the leadership transition and public representation of the station.

La Camera worked as general manger of WBUR for five years, and announced two weeks ago that he would be stepping down.

In a statement, BU Executive Vice President Joseph Mercurio said that BU, which headquarters WBUR, was excited to welcome Kravetz to the station.

“The hiring of Charles Kravetz fulfilled the University’s hope for a GM who would have the national stature that WBUR deserves,” Mercurio said. “He possesses outstanding journalism and management credentials, understands emerging technology, and has a strong local media connection.”

Kravetz first started working for New England Cable News in 1992, and in 2008 he was appointed the president and general manager. During his time at NECN, Kravetz helped to expand the fledgling company, opening four satellite bureaus around New England and helping to expand its distribution to almost four million homes.

“It’s a wonderful thing to be able to take over the leadership of an organization that is in such a strong position,” Kravetz said in the statement. “WBUR is uniquely situated in the Boston market. It is financially sound and owned by an extraordinary academic institution that supports it and gives it the freedom to do the kind of quality journalism we all admire.”

In the October Arbitron ratings, WBUR ranked 11th within the Boston radio market.
