Mercurio to step down as Executive VP

After 38 years at Boston University, Executive Vice President Joseph Mercurio has announced he will step down from his position on June 30, while remaining on in an advisory capacity until September.

Mercurio, a Metropolitan College ‘81 alumnus, said he will leave BU to pursue new opportunities in the world of commercial business.

“This is the right time for me to step down,” Mercurio said. “I’m young, and I’ve creative ideas that I would like to pursue.”

After a brief period as an undergraduate at Suffolk University, Mercurio was hired in an entry-level position at BU, allowing him to begin tuition-free study in MET in 1973.

Nearly four decades later, Mercurio is finally making the long awaited transition from institutional administration to commercial business.

In a letter to University leadership sent on Friday, President Robert Brown extolled the presence Mercurio brought to BU administration.

“Joe is legendary for his ability to grasp the complexity of Boston University and guide effective decisions in so many facets of what we do,” Brown said in the letter.

“No individual has played a larger role in creating a collegial environment for all of us who have the privilege of working at BU.”

“Working with Bob Brown, I have found new and innovative ways to support the academic mission of BU,” Mercurio said. “I’ve continued to learn meaningful principles and values of university leadership.”
