Former Bay State Gov. Mitt Romney publicly announced his intention to run for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday at the Bittersweet farm in Stratham, NH.
It is his second attempt at a Republican presidential campaign.
A crowd of people wearing T-shirts bearing Romney’s campaign slogan, “Believe in America,” gathered to hear the announcement, according to The Boston Globe.
“Who is it that rules this great nation?” Romney said. “You do.”
In his speech, Romney criticized President Barack Obama’s current leadership abilities and said that Obama has “failed America.”
He also discussed increasing gasoline prices and the consequences of the struggling economy for Americans while promising to cap government spending at 20 percent.
“It breaks my heart to see what is happening to our country,” Romney said.
Romney, who said he “believes in a country of freedom and opportunity, propelled by entrepreneurship,” also said he wants to balance the federal budget and pass a torch to the next generation, “not a bill.”
Romney said that if elected, he would handle the financial situation of the U.S. from a CEO’s point of view and said that “his primary focus from Day One as president will be job-creation,” according to The Boston Globe.
“We know we can bring country back,” Romney said. “I’m Mitt Romney. I believe in America. And I’m running for president of the United States.”
