Thanks For The Vote Of Confidence

After reading Chancellor Silber’s defense of the existing Guest Policy at BU, I was pleased that he finally made himself visible in the BU community. However, I was also thoroughly irritated by many of the things he said about BU students and their “thoughtless” behavior. It’s a shame that Chancellor Silber doesn’t know the BU community better; if he did, he would surely realize that the student body is comprised of students who are old enough, and in most cases, mature enough, not to need daycare. I live on Bay State Road, an environment free from inconvenient card swiping, and I have yet to have problems with any “trysting” in my presence. Nor has my house been subject to vandals and those wishing to physically assault members of the house. Guests are possible at any time, but we are still safe. Why? We have to let these people into our house by unlocking the door for them. We don’t, however, have to turn them away because it is 12:02 a.m., two minutes after nonresidents turn into villains, or worse, sexual exhibitionists!

I’d like to note that I know of no other university that makes its students swipe into their residences. When my friends come to visit me, they are shocked at this swiping policy. They are further surprised that I can only take them to one campus dining hall, as I cannot sign guests in to any other dorms.

I hope that Chancellor Silber will consider revisions to the existing Guest Policy. A little trust and confidence in the BU student body would be greatly appreciated.
