unbelievable…

(I submitted a similar one yesterday, but I heard it was too long. Here is a much shorter version as I am most concerned with responding to Professor Hagens opinion entry! Thanks so much!)

Erika Watson, CAS 03

Professor Margaret Hagen must be hoping that by writing in her opinion she will not be one of the teachers Silbur cuts from BU, or she is totally out of touch with today and needs to be reeducated about both contemporary society and psychology. I am astonished to see a professor of psychology support the banning of a group that aids in both emotional and psychological support. No matter what the issue–sexuality, eating disorders, alcoholism, school pressures etc.–support systems are one of the most important aids in improving the overall emotional/psychological welfare of people dealing with certain issues-why do you think group therapies exist! The group was obviously implemented for a reason, and if it was not harmful to anyone else, I see no reason why people should utilize thier time taking something positive away. Besides, even if the group helped only a minority of Academy students, that is still at least one person not suffering as much. As to say that sexual activity should not be taught in schools because anal intercourse is “the most efficient sexual means of transmission of HIV” is ludicrous. Are you trying to suggest that everyone who is gay and sexually active has HIV/AIDS? HIV/AIDS is spread through a number of sexual acts including heterosexual intercourse. Besides, homosexuals are not the only ones getting it from behind–I had some last night–and it was great! But, it was also because I was educated that I knew why and how to protect myself. You can go into any grade school across America and see young boys and girls already committing sexual acts. Wake up-if a school does not provide sexual education, that does not mean that kids are just not going to “do it”- it just means that they are going to find their own education else where–and if they’re not comfortable speaking about sex, including their sexuality, then they are sure as hell not going to feel comfortable telling someone to put a condom on. Why not help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS/STD’s/pregnancy etc. when you have a chance to and educate people–or is education not the mission of the academy, wait I’m confused. Maybe you need to take a sociology class- Childhood and Youth, and see what today’s childhood really consists of; or go to a day of HIV/AIDS education during FYSOP week, and see why education is vitally important in stopping the spread of HIV. As for bringing in religious matters-whose religious and spiritual welfare are you speaking of-yours? At a school such as Boston University where diversity ranges in cultural and ethnic to religious backgrounds, it is absurd to force your beliefs on others, yet alone make decisions that affect an entire school based upon them. Besides, isn’t that where the separation of church and state come in? I wasn’t aware that the Academy was a private “religious” organization. I thought it was one based on higher education and learning, but please excuse me if I’m wrong. Afterall, it seems that the education there is also based on higher profits and sheltered learning.
