FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

THE DAILY FREE PRESS ANNOUNCES NEW INVESTIGATIVE TEAM

New branded slogan, “You deserve an independent voice,” adopted by newspaper

BOSTON, MA (August 31, 2017) — The Daily Free Press has launched the newspaper’s first investigative team. Led by College of Communication senior Laney Ruckstuhl, this small, selective team is specifically dedicated to producing in-depth content for the student body that investigates topics that are of importance to them. The aim of the new initiative is to increase transparency on campus by telling a more engaging and well-rounded stories beyond the capabilities of the FreeP’s general news staff; the investigative team will have more time and resources and the ability to incorporate data, documents and visual elements into its stories.

“The newly designated investigative team comes out of a longstanding tradition The Daily Free Press upholds,” says Samantha J. Gross, chairman of Back Bay Publishing Co., Inc. “The paper was created in 1970 out of a need to hold authorities accountable during violent student protests on campus in the wake of the Kent State shootings. This team’s mission echoes the paper’s core value. Not only will the investigative team provide The Daily Free Press’ large student audience with insightful, high-quality journalism, but will ensure that those who hold power in the Boston University community are acting responsibly and fairly.”

In an effort to further the FreeP’s identity and duty to serve the Boston University community, the newspaper has adopted a new branded slogan to enter the academic year: “You deserve an independent voice.” The Back Bay Publishing Co. Inc.’s Board of Directors believe the phrase reflects the newspaper’s dedication to the student body to write informative, thought-provoking and entertaining journalism. As the only independent student newspaper on campus, the FreeP is vital for a freer campus community, by giving a voice to students who can, at times, feel powerless at a large university.
