BU Medical opens labs to high schools

For 15 years, Boston University's CityLab program has invited students from middle and high school with limited science equipment to work in the university-quality laboratories at the BU Medical Campus. Created in 1991 with a grant from the National Institutes of Health, CityLab provides students with a chance to perform experiments in BU labs, an opportunity that may not be available in their own schools.

AHA appoints Quatromoni to post

With childhood obesity rates on the rise - approximately 30 percent of children and adolescents are overweight and 15 percent weigh in as obese, according to the American Obesity Association - the American Heart Association recently named BU professor Paula Quatromoni as the Childhood Obesity Initiative spokeswoman to try to raise awareness and lower these rates.

Author shares breast cancer fight, despite lack of audience

Not a single student attended a book signing by breast-cancer survivor Monique Spencer last night at Barnes ' Noble at Boston University, marking a low point in speaker series' declining attendance. Spencer, author of Courage Muscle: A Chicken's Guide to Living with Breast Cancer, was scheduled to meet and greet students for two hours in the store's fifth-floor conference room.

When the idea of the cellular telephone was first introduced it was met with skepticism - most people didn't believe that it was necessary. People were content with their land-line phones and when the first model hit the market the demand was minimal. However, the landscape of information transfer has changed greatly in the two decades since the first commercial cell phone was released, and these changes have affected people's attitudes toward the technology.

EDITORIAL: A not-so-balanced view

Boston College administrators have issued an ultimatum: Either keep your speakers uncontroversial or bring an opposing viewpoint to balance them out. In an effort to keep student-sponsored speakers in line with the university's Jesuit and Catholic values, BC has instituted a new policy requiring student groups hosting presentations on controversial issues -- abortion, for example -- to provide a speaker to represent the Catholic point of view.

Who leaked information about Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deval Patrick's brother-in-law? The The Boston Herald reported on Oct. 13 that Patrick's brother-in-law, Bernard Sigh, was given 10 days to register as a sex offender for a 1993 conviction. Patrick responded by saying that he did not know his brother-in-law had to register.

At BU, 49 different cultural associations recognized by the Student Activities Office are a testament to the school's diversity.

RIPNICK: Students being raped of a proper sexual education

Rape. It's a rather uncomfortable word, isn't it? Simply defined, rape is forced sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal or oral penetration by a body part or an object. In some states, the term "rape" is used interchangeably with "sexual assault"-- a phrase that softens it, makes it seem a little more bearable.
