Mike Moffo NO Hero
I am writing this letter in response to the overflow of people reacting to the resignation of Mike Moffo as the Student Union President. First of all, there is a certain word being thrown around here, and that word is: Force. Mike Moffo was not forced from his position. He was completely aware of the clause in their constitution: “All members of the executive board and the President must maintain University recognized standards of good financial, academic, and disciplinary standing during their terms in office.” (taken directly from their constitution)
The proper word to be used here should be: Enforce. BU has the obligation to enforce the constitution of the Student Union that THEY created. The University is not at fault for Mike’s shortcomings as a student. The only one at fault here is Mike Moffo himself. So readers, please don’t pin blame on BU just because it is so easy to do so. Trust me, there’s a lot wrong with this University, but lay blame where blame is due.
If Mike Moffo were a strong leader he would have realized a long time ago that he was not doing well in school and something had to change. And he cannot say he was spending all his time with Student Union, I have not seen anything on this campus from Student Union except for some buses for Thanksgiving Break (that the Student Activities Business Office dealt with on the night they left) and those “BUnited” pins (which were not even made by Student Union but rather the Student Activities Office).
Secondly, many student leaders on this campus DO perform well in school and maintain University standards. So really, praising Mike Moffo for not performing academically downgrades the work BU’s real student leaders do all the time. After all, he is a senior, and he should know his own limits by now.
I do not sympathize with Mike whatsoever. And I have even lost respect for him for getting some friend from Harvard to write to the Daily Free Press and insult Boston University when no one was at fault but him.
So boo-hoo Mike. Here’s the world’s smallest violin playing just for you. Now go complain to those student leaders who deal with academics and still keep to University standards without clauses in their constitution like the Student Union’s. Every students first priority while here at BU are academics, and I am glad that BU is holding you responsible for your “negligence.” You are no different from any other student leader here. We all have commitments that extend beyond the classroom and we deal with them. You made a promise to us as the President of the Student Union, and you failed BU. BU did not fail you.
