In the aftermath of this weekend’s loss, the Boston University’s men’s swimming and diving team can take solace in one fact: beating Harvard University is no easy task.
The Terriers fell to the Crimson, 176-120, Saturday at the Fitness and Recreation Center’s Competition Pool.
“I thought we swam pretty well,” said BU coach Bill Smyth. “I’m proud of our team. Obviously the goal is to win, but the goal is also to pull a few positives out of it.”
Junior Andre Watson picked up the first of the Terriers’ few wins in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 258.28. The Rutgers University transfer also claimed a victory in the 1-meter by scoring 348.45.
“Andre is one of the top divers in the New England area. We wanted to make sure we gave him as much competition as possible. Harvard divers are some of the best in the area,” Smyth said.
Freshman Bryon Kallert captured a win in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.52). Sophomore Jeff Wurm and freshman Brett McKenzie finished behind Kallert to claim second and third place, respectively.
The Terriers made a comeback bid when graduate student Eric Carlson won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.85. Carlson was closely followed by freshman Kyle Ernst, who touched the wall in 2:11.77.
Sophomore Arik Seiler picked up a victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.29.
The Terriers concluded the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. Sophomores Kyle Berg, Seiler and Wurm and freshman Matt Rickett finished in 1:28.37.
But, in the end, it was the Crimson flushing out the Scarlet.
“Looking at Harvard, they are the best men’s team in the Northeast for the last 10 years,” Smyth said. “They are a true witness test to how we rank against the best.”
