Sporting her own signature jeans and wearing her trademark scowl, Victoria Beckham, also known as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls, arrived at Saks Fifth Avenue on Boylston Street yesterday to promote her new line of denim and sunglasses.
Hundreds waited in line for their chance to meet the pop-singer. Beckham, whose soccer-player husband David was not present, was in Boston to perform last night at the Spice Girls concert.
University of Rhode Island freshmen Jacqueline Lioi and Stephanie Summa and Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitative Sciences sophomore Christine Smith said they came to the department store at 7:15 a.m. to be the first in line.
Although Beckham was not scheduled to arrive until noon, they said they did not mind waiting. Many fans waiting to see Beckham said they were planning to attend the Spice Girls concert — their first tour since 1999 — later that night, while some just wanted a glimpse at Beckham.
“She’s a style icon,” said BU College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Alex Goldschmidt while waiting in line. “I think she’s the hottest thing in Hollywood. I love her. I’ll probably vomit and die if I don’t see her.”
Boston resident Peter Roy arrived at Saks prepared, holding a bouquet of roses for Beckham.
“I’ve been a fan since 1996 and I was at their concert in 1998,” he said. “I brought a letter from back then that I wrote to her, too.”
Jeans from Beckham’s dVb denim line typically run from $200 to $300, while sunglasses go for around $280. Those who bought a dVb product were allowed to cut in front of the massive line.
Algonquin Regional High School student Angela Nichols bought a pair of jeans in order to skip ahead in the line.
“When the Spice Girls started fading off I thought they were going to be gone forever, but then they came back and I think it’s really cool that they did that,” she said.
“[Her jeans] make your butt look great,” Beaver Country Day school student Sophie Myers said. Myers, along with two friends, had a chance to meet with Beckham at a private party before her public appearance at Saks.
“I said, ‘Thank you for putting up with all of us fat and ugly people,’ and then she said ‘No, no, you’re gorgeous,'” Myers’s friend Melissa Lefkowicz said.
