Women seeking a “good guy” need look no farther than the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus, which honored men working for gender equality yesterday at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel.
Created in 2002 by the MWPC, the annual Good Guys Awards recognize a few men who have made political goals more attainable for women through their work toward gender parity.
This year’s honorees were former Gov. Paul Cellucci, managing partner of Bowditch and Dewey LLP Louis Ciavarra, Action for Boston Community Development Inc. President and CEO Robert Coard and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Executive Vice President Peter Meade.
The MWPC, founded in 1971, is a branch of the National Women’s Political Caucus, an organization that confronts women’s issues such as abortion, family leave, sex education and equality of insurance benefits, with headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Deborah Shufin attended the event and said she wanted to stay politically active, learn more about the group and support its mission.
“This organization is very important to the community now because women are having a bigger political impact,” she said. “Especially looking at the presidential campaigns, it is clear that women are becoming more prominent.”
“These men we are recognizing today have opened the doors for women,” said MWPC Board President Ann Murphy. “The political and social progress of women depends not only on the determination of women but of men and the community as a whole. The purpose of an organization like this is to find opportunities for women.”
Although the award is recognizes those working toward the MWPC’s goals, advancements for women remain the group’s top priority, said MWPC Executive Director Jesse Mermell.
“The meat of the job is in the field, with the successes of the individual women we work with,” she said.
