We are writing in response to Amy Horowitz’s Feb. 13 Black History Month Spotlight. Ms. Horowitz should be commended for her research and work on the African American roots of Boston University. It is important to note all the important African-American alumni from BU to show how important they are to our community, especially in light of very low enrollments at BU among African-Americans. We believe it is very important to increase minority enrollment, and we were pleased to see other people speaking out about the lack of publicity during Black History Month. It is appalling to see the most publicized celebration of Black History Month deals with the dining halls, instead of the people who have made so many contributions to not only the African-American community, but also the BU community, as noted in Ms. Horowitz’s Spotlight. It is extremely sad such a notable historical figure in the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is also a notable alumnus, but publicity for his commemoration did not go much further than flyers posted. If BU made as big a deal about MLK as they do about the Patriots’ cheerleaders in the GSU, perhaps more students would be involved in Black History Month and King’s commemoration.
Congratulations to Ms. Horowitz on a job well done. We look forward to Part II of Black History in the Spotlight next week, as well as staying up ’til 5 a.m. every night as you prepare it!
