Although I am studying in London this semester through BU’s London Internship Program, I have been keeping up with the Guest Policy battle going on between students and the administration. I am thrilled that this serious initiative has been taken against this senseless policy.
During my five semesters in Boston, I had always lived on campus in buildings where the Guest Policy was strictly enforced, and it caused me much needless inconvenience. I was pleasantly surprised upon arriving at my London housing provided by BU to find there was not only no Guest Policy, but no security guards, either.
Now, I am extremely confused at why BU students in London are not sex-crazed exhibitionists ready to bring home thieves and engage in funky lovin’ on the weekends, but in Boston, they are. In fact, I would think American students studying in an area of a huge foreign city (not even on the campus of any particular university) would need security more than students living in dormitories on their home campus. But, in typical BU style, the complete opposite of logic is utilized, and in London, we are enjoying the ability to invite people over and have friends stay the weekend. I live in a flat with six other girls, two of whom live in my room. There is no forced voyeurism taking place just because we are free of a guest policy. If someone wants to have a sleepover guest, everyone in the apartment discusses it and invariably agrees that letting someone crash on the couch does not really inconvenience any of us at all. It’s almost like we are reasonable adults, which makes sense given that all of us are old enough to vote, drive and take out loans from the bank.
BU, please honestly assess what is going on here. In South Campus, Bay State Road, the apartments in several buildings on Commonwealth Avenue and in BU housing in London, students are treated like adults and are responsible for their own guests and roommate relations. Why not treat all students equally, instead of discriminating against the ones who just happen to live in a large dormitory? Security and monitoring of guests is reasonable; restricting their presence is not.
Good luck to the students trying to amend this policy, and hopefully when I return to campus housing in September, some change will have taken place.
