Radford University students headed to classes Friday morning after Radford officials lifted a campus-wide lockdown at 2:55 a.m., five hours after a fatal shooting just a few blocks away from the Radford, Va., campus, according to an RU press release. The shooter has not yet been apprehended.
‘The campus is secure, and Radford University will now return to normal operations,’ the RU release stated.
The victim, Floyd Wilfred-Linn Wright Jr., 33, from Christiansburg, was shot and killed Thursday at about 9 p.m. Wright, who was not an RU student, was pronounced dead at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, according to the release.
‘The homicide is being treated as an isolated incident, not a random act of violence,’ the release stated.
Students were ‘advised to stay inside and lock their doors’ because the shooter, also not an RU student, appeared to have fled onto RU’s campus and was seen near its student center, according to The Tartan, RU’s student newspaper, which obtained a letter from RU police.
Students were notified of the lockdown by email, phone call and text message, according to the New River Voice, an online Roanoke publication.
During the lockdown, Radford police, RU police and police from surrounding areas searched the campus ‘building-by-building,’ the RU release stated.
The suspected shooter has not yet been apprehended, according to the Roanoke Times.
RU senior Grace Franceschelli said in an email that although the on-campus students were safe, the police failed to protect those living off-campus.
‘They did a nice job bringing in the SWAT team to check all the buildings on the campus, yet they did nothing for those students living off-campus,’ Franceschelli said. ‘Thursdays are a busy night in this town, and there was no protection in the streets.’
The students at RU are shaken by this incident, and its timing was particularly worrisome, Franceschelli said.
‘It was an extremely frightening situation, especially with the anniversary of the VA Tech massacre coming up,’ she said.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute is located about 20 minutes from RU, she said. On April 16, 2007, a student gunman at the university killed 32 people before turning the weapon on himself.
‘Everyone was scared and couldn’t help but think that may be happening here,’ Franceschelli said.
