In a news story Friday (“Preventing HIV: A new discovery,” page 1), information attributed to Amy Flood citing the side effects of the HIV drug Viread should not have included the word “dangerous.”
In the same story, it was suggested that Gilead, a drug manufacturer, conducted tests on both infected and non-infected people. In fact, they only tested infected people.
The article also suggested that a CDC study released last week contained new information about the HIV tests. In fact, there was no study last week bu the information was collected over time from several CDC studies.
Dr. Jennifer Ruth from the CDC was quoted expressing her confidence in the ability of HIV drugs to prevent contraction of the virus. She actually said that results in animal testing had not yet translated into results for humans and that it was too early to draw a conclusion.
The HIV drugs are administered orally, not inject, as the story suggested.
