Boston University junior Matt Gilroy was named New England’s top defenseman Tuesday, becoming the second straight Terrier to win the Bob Monahan Award, following in the footsteps of former BU blueliner Sean Sullivan.
The North Bellmore, N.Y. native also joined senior wingers Bryan Ewing and Pete MacArthur on the region’s Division I All-Star Team, as announced by the New England Hockey Writers.
The trio was selected as Hockey East First-Team All Stars at last month’s league banquet, while freshman forward Colin Wilson garnered the conference’s Rookie of the Year award.
Wilson (12 goals – 23 assists – 35 points) continued to reap the benefits of his superb rookie season Tuesday, when he nabbed New England Rookie of the Year honors.
In other news, former Terrier goaltender John Curry was named to the American Hockey League’s All-Rookie Team on Wednesday. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins affiliate) standout owns the league’s fourth-best goals-against average (2.16) and ranks second in save percentage (.916).
Going Pro
Ewing, MacArthur and fellow senior forwards Brian McGuirk and Ryan Weston signed amateur tryout contracts with AHL clubs last week.
McGuirk, who was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the eighth round of the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft, joined the team’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, last Monday. The former BU co-captain notched an assist in his professional debut last Wednesday.
Ewing, whose 35 points during conference play led Hockey East this season, signed with the Springfield Falcons (Edmonton Oilers affiliate) last Wednesday. The Plymouth native finished second behind University of New Hampshire goaltender Kevin Regan in conference Player of the Year voting.
MacArthur and Weston inked their deals last Thursday, joining the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (New York Islanders affiliate) and Albany River Rats (Carolina Hurricanes affiliate), respectively. MacArthur (21-24-45), the first Terrier to eclipse the 40-point mark in a season since Mike Pandolfo in 2001-02, led BU in scoring for the third straight year.
Weston, whose 53 penalty minutes ranked second on the team this season, was a key contributor to one of the top fourth lines in college hockey.
