Fenway Park may be home to The Red Sox but on Wednesday afternoon it played host to thousands of college students.
Despite the gloomy weather, more than 7,000 college students from the Boston area celebrated the beginning of baseball season at Fenway Park’s College Day on Wednesday afternoon.
Students from universities such as Boston University, Boston College, Simmons College, Northeastern University, Berklee College of Music, Suffolk University and Harvard University, among others, visited the park where they received free stuff and got to tour the legendary stadium.
Students were joined by Wally the Green Monster, and had the chance to get discounts on Red Sox merchandise, discounted baseball tickets and to take part in batting practice at Fenway.
Fenway’s College Day was organized by Edhance, a company that retailers use to offer discounts to college students.
In order to get free things at many of the booths, vendors asked students to log onto Facebook and “like” their companies. In exchange, students would receive goods like t-shirts, key chains, pens and sunglasses.
The vendors who came to distribute free goods included Frisbees from Sperry Top-Sider, who gave out frisbees, Segway Adventures, who gave demonstrations and Laced Boston, who gave out free tattoos and stickers.
Students were also able to snack on free food, including ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s, frozen yogurt from BerryLine, Sabra Hummus’s pita chips and hummus and El Pelon Taqueria.
Representatives from the Professional Golf Association golf tour and the New England Revolution soccer team had stands as well.
Many BU students took a trip to Yawkey Way to participate in the free fun event.
“I walked around and signed up for free stuff with a bunch of companies,” said College of Arts and Sciences freshman Christine Austin.
Some students at College Day came for the free food and ice cream.
“We got free food, like Ben and Jerry’s, hummus and some pens,” Austin said.
People were allowed to walk around the stadium near the bleacher area to eat and take photos, an opportunity exclusive to the event.
“You could go up on the stands to eat food and take pictures. You could even take pictures with two of the World Series trophies,” Austin said.
The free goods were extremely popular among students.
“I got some gift certificates and won a keychain bottle opener,” said College of Communication freshman Josh Delgado, who found out about the event through Facebook.
“I got invited on Facebook and decided I’d just come check it out,” he said.
Students also collected other giveaways like Frisbees and sunglasses.
“I got sunglasses, free food, stickers and frisbees,” said CAS freshman Andrew Mullins.
Students who missed Wally the Green Monster were disappointed.
“We didn’t see Wally, but it was still good,” Mullins said.
Some people walked out with less than a bagful of free items but had fun nonetheless.
“I just walked around. So far I’ve gotten water and a gift card,” said CAS junior Janessa Greenleaf. “There’s a lot of free stuff – what college student doesn’t like free stuff?”

Freep, are you serious? I got a headache just reading this article. There are a bunch of mistakes and the article reads as if the author just found the list of vendors and wrote down what they were giving away. Come on..
