After securing its 15th straight America East title last weekend, the Boston University women’s tennis team will face No. 4 Stanford University next Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
With Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Binghamton University, the Terriers (11-7) earned themselves an automatic bid to the national tournament and a short respite before the intense practices leading up to the match.
“I gave them a couple of days off after the America East [Tournament],” said BU coach Lesley Sheehan. “It was a very close, exciting and emotional weekend. Now, we are going to try to prepare for a very challenging match against Stanford.”
All six Stanford singles players are nationally ranked, including No. 3 freshman ace Hilary Barte. Sheehan expects the Cardinal to bring “a very high-powered game with a lot of aggressiveness.”
And yet, the Cardinal (19-4) are not invincible. Sheehan plans on her team playing well-contested, consistent matches and attacking early in the match.
“They’re going to need to be very consistent in their games. But also, this is Stanford’s first round,” Sheehan said. “That’s usually when [top] seeds are very nervous — the first round. I’m going to let [the team] know this is the time to go after them, right here in the first round.”
