Whoever said the school year can’t start off with a big, shiny Apple after the fourth grade never went to Boston University.
BU’s Apple users group, MacBU, held its inaugural meeting yesterday at the Photonics Center, where new Mac users and self-proclaimed “Mac elitists” gathered to discuss their Apple appreciation, learn Mac tricks and raffle off a new iTouch.
“Actually, it’s kind of a funny story,” group president Trevor Taylor said. “[We] were talking about how we spent a week every night for two hours on our Mac stuff, and by the end of the week, we were like, ‘Why don’t we start a club?'”
Taylor, a College of Arts and Sciences junior, said members will learn “everything they want to know” at meetings.
The group motto, “Once you Mac, you’ll never go back,” rang true – a 30-member turnout began with icebreakers in which students introduced themselves and shared their first Apple products.
Freshmen, some of whom said they were brand new to Macs, dominated the meeting, though a few upperclassmen came out to share the “MacLove.”
After officers discussed future meeting and events, such as a group trip to New York City and a movie trip in Boston, the officers gave presentations about Macs.
Group secretary Juan Jhong presented a video about Apple product rumors, which introduced the new iPod nano and newer versions of iTunes and Safari.
Sophomore Sarah Robertson said the iChat presentation was helpful.
“The reason I came to this meeting was for my friends, but I also have a Mac, and I don’t know anything about my Mac, so I wanted to learn stuff,” she said. “I’ve had it for a year but I don’t really know how to use it very well.”
College of Arts and Sciences junior Jason Kaplan said he particularly enjoyed this presentation because he “learned to use spaces more effectively.”
Attendee Travis Gentile was the lucky raffle winner of an iTouch. He said he would certainly return for future meetings.
Gentile said although he does not consider himself a “Mac elitist” yet, he hopes to become one after a couple of meetings.
