In a move that rivals the discovery of the theory of relativity, the College of Arts and Sciences has decided, after months of debate, to replace the building’s CAS Cart with an Einstein’s Bros. Bagels shop.
The CAS Cart, which offered soups, sandwiches and pastries, had lost its appeal, said Lisa Doherty, the CAS project manager.
The bagel shop, now under construction in the CAS basement, will accept convenience points and cash and also has wireless Internet, computer stations and air conditioning, according to the CAS website.
“We realized that the space was due for renovations and wanted to introduce a new concept that offered a wider variety of options,” said Michelle Vitagliano, marketing director of Boston University Dining Services, in an email.
Einstein will serve breakfast as well as sandwiches, paninis and salads until 8 p.m., according to the website.
Administrators began contemplating the replacement in April and construction began in July, Doherty said. Although Einstein’s was supposed to open when students began school in September, unexpected difficulties led to a postponement of the opening until early October.
Dining Services reviewed many dining options and decided on a restaurant that could offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, Vitagliano said.
“We also looked at the pricing structure and feel that [Einstein’s] offers a high-quality product for a very reasonable price,” she said. “Especially for the college market, Einstein’s is rapidly growing on college campuses around the country.”
Doherty said other dining options such as Au Bon Pain and Dunkin’ Donuts were not available for many reasons.
“The CAS Cart was obsolete and the choices and variety weren’t as extensive as we would like,” she said. “It was something CAS always had on its wish list.”
Student Union President Adil Yunis said the Union had discussions over the summer with ARAMARK, the company that oversees BU Dining Services, to choose the replacement.
“It is beneficial for the student body to know that administrators come to students, and in specific the Student Union, for input about venues,” said Yunis, a CAS senior.
Yunis, who compared the Einstein’s dining option to Bread Winners café and Starbucks in the School of Management, said the best part of Einstein’s will be the location.
“Students have busy schedules and try to fit as much as possible in very little time,” he said. “CAS is a very large and busy school and you want to offer dining venues that are convenient for students to frequent in between classes.”
