Shanti Maung, a Harvard senior and president of Harvard’s Burma Action Movement, organized a protest for peace in Burma on Friday afternoon. Students, activists and Buddhist nuns marched around Harvard University’s campus and listened to speeches in Harvard Square.
Recently, Myanmar’s, previously known as Burma, junta military regime began using violence against Burmese monks who joined the protest in support of their fellow citizens. The monks are protesting the high price of transportation and food in Myanmar.
Prices have risen since the Burmese government increased fuel prices in mid-August; making it hard for citizens to afford basic commodities and transportation. The monks are the highest moral authority in Myanmar and have come to the aid of citizens who rose up in peaceful protest at the end of August.
