As the Yankees and the Red Sox battled in the shadow of the Green Monster last weekend for a spot in the playoffs, fans of both teams gathered at BU Central to view the games.
The Student Activities Office organized the Friday, Saturday and Sunday games, which SAO Programs Coordinator Joshua Hiscock said attracted more than 100 people the first day.
“The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is always a big rivalry here in Boston for students,” he said.
Despite the rivalry, students described the atmosphere during the games as friendly.
“It’s second-best to being at Fenway,” College of Engineering freshman and Yankees fan Mike Augelli said.
College of Communication freshman Martin Swartz said he came to the game with group of friends, who were all Red Sox fans.
“It gets a sort of camaraderie among Red Sox and Yankees fans and gives a place for everyone to come together and watch the game,” he said.
ENG freshman Allie Paquette said BU Central’s screen beat her dorm room television set.
“It’s nicer than watching [the game] in your room,” she said. “There’s more people watching it to be excited about it.”
SAO provided food from Catering on the Charles for students to eat during the game.
“One of my friends said there was food and stuff,” ENG senior and Yankees fan Andy Eisen said. “It’s hard to pass up free food.”
The pool tables and ping-pong tables were also open for students to use throughout the games.
“It’s a Jillian’s-type atmosphere,” Hiscock said. “You can do some other stuff besides watch the game.”
This is the first playoff season shown at BU Central since all of the dorms were wired for cable television last spring, but Hiscock said students still opted to watch the games at BU Central.
“This is the first baseball season with cable,” he said. “But we were expecting students to want to come together.”
