Despite the absence of one Mr. Kenny McCormick – and his presence is indeed missed – season six of Comedy Central’s controversial hit series “South Park” ranks as an instant classic, bringing together several of the show’s all-time most memorable episodes in one explosively hilarious three-disc compilation.
Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are not afraid to tackle controversial issues in the media today. They are able to take priest molestation and turn it into a half hour of homosexual, atheist and Vatican-related jokes in “Red Hot Catholic Love.” And are able to turn the war in Iraq into Eric Cartman’s selfish desires for an awesome Christmas gift by teaming him up with both Santa Claus and Jesus in “Red Sleigh Down.”
Classic episodes such as “Freak Strike” and “The Simpsons Already Did It” truly cement Cartman’s position as the greatest animated character in the history of cartoons. The void left by Kenny’s sudden disappearance is filled admirably by Butters, the goody-two-shoes punching bag replacement. Stan and Kyle are as solid as ever, exchanging witty banter and fat and Jewish jokes while embracing their 8-year-old innocence (as in “Bebe’s Boobs Destroy Society”). Throw in the host of celebrity guests and minor characters, from Russell Crowe to Maury Pauvich, and Towelie to Token, and this adds up to one very funny ride.
