See, it happened. They finally did it. After all the time spent, hell finally froze over. However, it doesn’t include a rape crisis center. It doesn’t include adding sexual preference to the nondiscrimination policy. It doesn’t include 24 hour study areas. It doesn’t include more on-campus housing for students. It doesn’t include improving the housing we do have. It doesn’t include eliminating the rats from Hamilton and the Village and the roaches from south. It doesn’t include state of the art class rooms and comfortable desks for everyone. It doesn’t include lowering tuition. It doesn’t include the reinstitution of the football team. It doesn’t include a new president of the university, and it most certainly doesn’t include the elimination of chancellor John Silber. No, it doesn’t include any of these things. The “it” I’m talking about is the change in the guest policy, a monumental change by any standards. However, people are still not happy with it. I hear phrases such as “a step in the right direction” and “its a start.” What will make you happy? I’ll tell you what will make me happy; any of the things I mentioned above; any of the countless things I could name that would make this university better, not including the guest policy change. You can now access any dorm, as long as you live on campus, between 7 am and midnight, monday through friday, without being signed in. Emergency overnight passes for family members now exist. What else do you people want? Do you want infinite overnight guest passes? Do you want 24 hour sign in? I don’t. I don’t want people running around my building all hours of the night. Don’t you sleep? No person should be allowed into any building unless they have a reason to be there, and somebody who lives in the building is responsible for them. If you don’t think that should be true, go to Northeastern. Don’t get me wrong, I love all 30,000 BU students, but I don’t trust you. I still want to be safe. I hope that these major changes are the only ones the administration ever makes. The guest policy is not an issue to fight a war over. Its an inconvience like the weather. And like the weather, its easily avoidable. If its raining out, carry an umbrella. Don’t petition the administration to stop it from raining. If you can’t get in to see your friend after midnight, get there before midnight. You might have to change your plans or manage your time better, but the guest policy is a rule that must exist. Without rules, there is anarachy. Student Union, now that you’re time has been spent on fixing such a small problem, start focusing your energy elsewhere to more important things. Make Boston University a better place for all students. Everybody else, quit whining that you didn’t get everything you wanted. This change is more than you could have asked for. You’re acting like the spoiled child on christmas who didn’t get a nintendo game cube he had his heart set on. Suck it up. Santa doesn’t exist. At least wait till it takes effect. It might be better than you think. However, it better be at least 3 months after it does take effect till I hear anymore crying about how unfair it is. Until then, I’ll enjoy the final days of peace and quiet.
