The Boston University Police Department is investigating a Tuesday night collision involving a student and one of its patrol cars, according to a school spokesman.
BUPD officers said they could not yet release any reports filed the night of the collision, when a cruiser hit School of Law graduate student Yeon Lee crossing the street in front of Marsh Plaza near the BU Central T stop at 11:15 p.m.
The car was turning left onto Commonwealth Avenue to head West, according to a witness. It is illegal for cars to make that turn from both the St. Mary’s Street bridge — a one-way road — and the inbound side of Commonwealth Avenue.
Officers declined to comment the night of the incident, and no further details have been made available since. It is not the department’s policy to give police reports to the public, said BUPD Sgt. Larry Cuzzi, adding he has never given one to someone not involved with a case.
The BUPD updates crime logs that list times and basic facts of reported incidents, but there is no public entry yet for the collision.
“She text messaged me and said she was in and out of tests and X-rays all night,” said Elizabeth Brennan, a College of General Studies sophomore who witnessed the collision. “She said she was fine.”
Brigham and Women’s Hospital could not provide information on Lee’s status last night.
Brennan helped Lee after she was hit and has since stayed in contact with her.
Because the collision involved one of the department’s officers and vehicles, BUPD will not release information until an investigation is complete, said BU spokesman Colin Riley.
Police have not commented on whether the officer made an illegal turn before he hit the student Tuesday night.
“Cruisers and law enforcement and emergency medical vehicles have a lot more latitude than you and I,” Riley said.
