It is as rewarding to note that BU students (those quoted in Ms. Galvydis’ story) respect the significance of Veteran’s Day as it is disconcerting to hear the administration’s reasoning for disregarding it.
Columbus Day, while worthy of recognition, does NOT merit suspension of classes. Veteran’s Day, on the other hand, is set aside to recognize all those who have risked or given their lives in service to their country. I submit that a majority of BU students are aware of someone in their family or circle of friends who has made such a sacrifice.
But regardless of one’s level of respect for the contribution of veterans, the argument that it’s a trade-off for not holding classes the day after Thanksgiving is spurious at best. Maybe the administration should try holding classes on that Friday some year and then count the empty seats.
I think both the BU student body and faculty deserve better than warped logic in defense of poor scheduling decisions.
Sincerely, William Fletcher (parent of a BU student)
