As a proud new member of BU’s chapter of Gamma Phi Beta, I found the cartoon by Derek Larson in yesterday’s issue of The Daily Free Press extremely offensive (‘Iggy and Rolf,’ Nov. 11, pg. 7).
Does the creator of this comic know any women who are in a sorority here on campus? Since becoming a member of the Greek system (a decision that I have not once regretted), I have met a number of women from each of the sororities and I don’t know anyone who fits the type of girl who is portrayed in this cartoon. I am an extremely down-to-earth person, and I have met countless people like me in mine, and indeed in all of the sororities. If that cartoon was made stereotyping any other female group on campus, I doubt it would have been published.
I understand that the show ‘Sorority Life’ on MTV, and many other TV shows and movies portray members of sororities in an unfortunate way. However, those portrayals are not nearly accurate. I surmise that the artist watched one of these shows and took what he saw for truth, or he was turned down by a member of a sorority and sought revenge. In either case, I suggest people get to know more about sororities and the women in them before they jump to grossly inaccurate conclusions.
