EDIT: Faculty raises deserved

By Daily Free Press Admin January 12, 2004
After two years of sacrificing for the university by going without raises, Boston University faculty and staff members can finally breathe a sigh of relief. As the cost of living in the Boston area has continued to rise, many faculty and staff members will finally get to pad their wallets a little bit.

PERSPECTIVE: Berkey addresses inflating concerns about grades

By Daily Free Press Admin January 12, 2004
I've been asked to help welcome students back to campus by discussing the issue of grade inflation (or, as some are saying, "grade deflation"). While I doubt that this topic occupied many students' thoughts during the holiday break, and it does not make for the cheeriest of greetings, I know it has been a matter of some continuing concern.

JAN. 7:Terrier hockey hits low with ‘shameful display’ in loss to UMass

By Daily Free Press Admin January 9, 2004
It looked like the Boston University Terriers hit their low during a pathetic second period that led to a 3-1 home loss to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in November. Less than a week later, they sunk even further with a demoralizing 5-2 decision at Harvard University. Then, after turning in what BU hockey coach Jack Parker called the worst effort he has ever seen his team put up against arch-rival Boston College at Conte Forum Dec. 5, it seemed the Terriers could not sink any lower. They did Wednesday.

DEC. 30: Red-hot men’s hoopsters pull huge upset at Michigan

By Daily Free Press Admin January 8, 2004
With the new year quickly approaching, the Boston University men's and women's basketball teams will be sad to see December go. With its 61-60 upset victory over the University of Michigan on Dec. 30 in Ann Arbor, the men's squad (6-3) posted its sixth straight win dating back to Dec. 1. The Terriers shocked the high-flying Wolverines (8-2) in front of 10,419 at Michigan's Crisler Arena as senior forward Ryan Butt and junior guard Chaz Carr scored 14 and 13 points respectively to lead BU to one of the biggest wins in program history. Ryan Butt, who led all BU scorers with 14 points Tuesday night, played a big role in the Terriers 61-60 upset of Michigan.

JAN. 2: Icedogs give Gophers a go in 5-5 tie

By Daily Free Press Admin January 8, 2004
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Jan. 2 - Terrier fans journeying to Mariucci Arena to watch the Boston University hockey team take on the two-time defending national champion University of Minnesota in a two-game set to start the new year saw their trip made worthwhile Friday. An arena record crowd of 10,303 saw, without question, BU's most exciting game of the year, as the Terriers (5-5-5, 2-4-2 Hockey East) came back from four different deficits to earn a hard-fought 5-5 tie with the red-hot Golden Gophers (9-8-2, 4-7-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association), who had won eight of their last nine coming in.

JAN. 3: For second straight night, Terriers and Gophers all tied up

By Daily Free Press Admin January 8, 2004
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Jan. 3 - Two days and 130 minutes of hockey decided absolutely nothing between old-time rivals Boston University and the University of Minnesota, as the teams battled to their second 5-5 tie in as many nights Saturday. But after coming back from four different deficits Friday (they came back from two more Saturday), the Terriers (5-5-6) looked like they should have had this one, holding a 4-2 lead early in the third period. Three Minnesota (9-8-3) goals in less than two minutes deflated that hope, however, and BU needed a slapper by Dan Spang with 10:04 to play to earn the tie.

JAN. 7: Men push win streak to nine; women’s streak ends at three

By Daily Free Press Admin January 8, 2004
Over the past month, the Boston University men's and women's basketball teams haven't really gotten the opportunity to find out what losing is like. But on Wednesday, while one team saw its recent fortune continue with another win, the other saw its success fade with a loss.

Pres. search slated for summer

By Daily Free Press Admin January 4, 2004
The Boston University Board of Trustees will probably not even consider starting a search for BU's ninth president before June 30, board Vice-Chairman Dexter Dodge said Wednesday. Dodge also said President ad interim Aram V. Chobanian could continue leading the university for longer than originally expected - perhaps even becoming the full-fledged president.
