n I would like to start off this letter by saying that I regret ever having to write it. However, as the vice president of public relations for the Panhellenic Council here at Boston University, I know it is my duty.
I am a representative for all eight sororities on campus and for the Greek system, the largest student group at BU. This past week, a column titled “Silber dead after life bent on world domination” (pg. 7, Feb. 4) appeared and since then hundreds of girls have uttered Patrick May’s name, and it’s not because they admire your writing, but because they despise you.
The column contained the line, “Silber’s remarks would soon become ironic, when, in 1990, he was found fornicating with two University Professors Program coeds and the entire Gamma Phi Beta sorority in a vat of rice pudding.” As a former Daily Free Press staff writer and a journalism student, I value the freedom of the press. I also value truth and high-quality journalism.
Patrick, you may view this untrue statement as funny – actually, you might think it is hilarious. But we don’t. The next time you choose to pick on someone, pick on someone your own size. Pick on someone small. The hundreds of girls that you chose to degrade are the girls that give BU a sense of community. They are the girls that promote leadership, scholarship, philanthropy and sisterhood. They are the girls that clean up the community you live in by volunteering their time and energy.
The sororities on campus would also like to thank The Daily Free Press editors who chose to use this degrading quote as an eyesore, the editors that placed the comment in bold in the center of the page.
If you want to make fun of Silber, that’s none of my business. He’s a public figure. But there are a couple hundred girls out there that are deeply offended by your radical, false statements. So, Patrick, next time you go into The Daily Free Press office, maybe you should leave your useless insults at home.
