More than 50 Boston University alumni shared career advice and anecdotes to kick off the College of Arts and Sciences’ Career Exploration Week Tuesday night.
More than 60 students came to the annual event, organized by CAS and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association.
The session was aimed at showing “our education can carry you anywhere,” CAS Alumni Relations officer Kate Howard said.
Students chose from three groups: Psychology and Sociology, Biology and Chemistry, and English. Alumni at the event came from varied backgrounds, ranging from the graduating class of 1966 to that of three years ago. The alumni traced their job experiences from their years at BU to the present.
“You can have the best plans in the world, but life will happen to you,” said Ed Colozzi, a 1966 CAS graduate. Before becoming a mental health counselor in Boston, Colozzi ran a private practice in Hawaii.
Another speaker, Maria-Paz Armon, a 1997 CAS graduate with a degree in sociology, worked for various companies and eventually launched her own business, Gentoonature Luxury Shopping Directory – an upscale shopping company.
“My sociology background allowed me to see the different opportunities that came my way,” she said.
Several alumni emphasized the importance of networking to getting the careers and jobs students want.
“Do something you love and follow that passion, but focus on networking,” Colozzi said.
Alumni also told students to use BU’s resources, such as its alumni directory and the Office of Career Services.
“They gave useful tips about how to network and keep up contacts,” said CAS senior Kristin Wicks.
Career Exploration Week will continue on Feb. 18 and 19 in CAS from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
