n The International Students Consortium fully endorses Adil Yunis for Student Union President. Yunis is the man of the people. He has demonstrated this by reaching out to many cultural, political, religious and Greek groups, just to name a few. The position of Student Union president is one of the most salient issues on campus — it directly affects student life. Change is needed to spur a re-conceptualization of the Student Union. Accessibility, efficiency, shared vision, accountability and a stronger sense of collectiveness and cohesion are easy to assume as interchangeable elements, and to this day they have been either ignored or dismissed by the Union.
This is why the consortia model is a failure. Even one of the simplest models of economics and politics — incentives and disincentives — is not being considered. If a student leader wants to encourage and recruit more students to get involved, that will only happen by utilizing pluralism and collective efforts. Adil does not only portray the prominent characteristics of diverse individuals, but he understands and associates himself with everyone because he is one of us. Yunis is the person who will fully advocate the common-ground practice of Martin Luther King Jr., which states that unity through involvement is a must for the future of Boston University. Yunis is a visionary person who understands the indissoluble hierarchy, bureaucracy, inaccessibility and people not being held accountable for decisions made regarding student life.
Given both the international and domestic students’ demands for and expectations of heterogeneity, a global, competitive, involved, active and diverse community environment should be equated for the future of this university. We do believe that Yunis is the person who will practice and understand these dynamics in creating a unified diverse community — a united Boston University.
