Juliane Miller, a College of Fine Arts student described by friends as creative and compassionate, died Aug. 31 at the Sherman Oaks Hospital in the Sherman Oaks district of Los Angeles. She was 20.
Miller, who would have been a junior this fall, was admitted to the hospital Aug. 22 after suffering a heart attack and intracranial bleeding, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner Department. She died Aug. 31 at 12:27 a.m.
Her roommate, Andie Adelman, said Miller had no history of heart problems. After she suffered a heart attack, she slipped into a coma for just over a week.
Adelman and other friends are planning a memorial for Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. at Dexter Park. The group plans to compile a memory book to celebrate her life and attendees are welcome to bring pictures or stories to add.
Adelman remembered Miller for her academic achievement, creativity and being “really well-cultured.”
“She was extremely funny,” the College of Communication junior said. “Probably out of everyone I know, she could make me laugh the hardest.”
Miller had aspirations to be an actress in New York or Los Angeles, Adelman said. Over the summer, Miller was working with a theater company in her hometown of Palo Alto, Calif.
Miller’s other roommate, Nikki Vidler, said she went to Miller for help and advice whenever she had a problem.
“She was such a caring and compassionate person,” the COM junior said. “I’ve never met a more caring person.”
“It’s a tragic loss,” she said, “but we want everyone to sit around and tell stories and remember things about her that were so positive. A piece of her will always be with us.”
Late last fall, Miller became close with Jennifer Ducharme, a CFA junior. Ducharme said she got to know her through the college’s performance program.
“If I could see her one more time, I wish I could tell her, ‘Thank you for being in my life,'” she said. “I at least have that. That I got to know her.”
University officials said they were unaware of Miller’s death and could not comment.
