There isn’t much that needs to be said in terms of inspiration for the Boston University men’s soccer team (9-6-3, 3-2-3 AE) as it prepares for tomorrow’s America East Tournament quarterfinal matchup against the University of New Hampshire (5-4-8, 2-1-5) at Nickerson Field.
It’s relatively simple: lose and they’re done.
At the current rate, the prospects do not bode well for the Terriers. Over the past two games – a combined 206 minutes — they have failed to score.
After a scoreless tie against New Hampshire on Oct. 31, BU was blanked again at the University of Vermont last Saturday en route to a 1-0 loss.
“We’re trying to get our finishing down,” Roberts said. “We haven’t scored a goal in two games. We need to start finishing. That’s what this week was about, and the guys know what they need to do.”
Whether because of a lack of efficiency or a minor collapse with the loss of sophomore midfielder Samuel Appiah, BU has managed to reel off just 18 total shots over the last two games. As the Terriers have tried forcing the majority of their attempts past defenses packing at least eight defenders in the box, scoring opportunities have been few and far between.
While set-play execution is a point of emphasis, Roberts has focused on opening up the middle of the zone by exploiting UNH’s defensive flanks.
“It’s been a combination of working on both [styles],” Roberts said. “But we’ve worked more on the running game and working the ball down the side to get behind [UNH].”
UNH has a tendency to drop back extra defenders to protect itself, so the Terriers will get their possessions. The key for the Terriers, though, will be getting behind UNH’s extended defense.
“They don’t give up a lot of chances themselves,” Roberts said. “They keep a lot of numbers back. We have to get the ball down and get behind them. It’s going to come down to finishing off our chances.”
While BU’s midfield game has been strong of late, protecting broken plays and unforced turnovers will fall into the hands of a defense that has allowed just six goals in its last eight games.
“We haven’t given up many chances in the last month,” Roberts said. “We’re happy about that, but we still need to keep that going. With any game, the midfield is huge. It’s going to be important that we keep possession and take advantage of that.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Hrafn Davidsson will be back in goal after missing a chunk of October due to a leg injury.
“He is ready to go. Everyone is ready to go. They know what is at stake,” Roberts said.
