The Von Bondies, an indie-blues-punk band from Detroit, Mich., rocked the Paradise Monday night in a free show sponsored by Cingular. Jason Stollsteimer (guitar/vocals), Marcie Bolen (guitar), Jenny MacIsaac (bass), and Don Blum (drums) are best known for their 2004 hit “C’mon C’mon” off their second album, Pawn Shoppe Heart.
The band formed in 2000 and hit it big when they participated on Jack White’s (The White Stripes) legendary Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation, which led to their signing with Symphony for the Recording Industry and touring as the opening act for The White Stripes. In 2001, the Von Bondies released their first album, entitled Lack of Communication and produced by White himself, and later signed with Sire for their 2003 major label debut Raw and Rare.
The show started at 9 p.m. with opening act Johnny Headband, a techno-acid band from Detroit. The Von Bondies played for 45 minutes, opening up with a few new songs to be recorded in early 2007. While Stollsteimer and White had a public falling out (and a public fight) in 2004 and have yet to reconcile, White’s influence could be heard in crowd pleasers like “Broken Man,” a song about being from Michigan.
Monday night marked MacIsaac’s first show in Boston with the band and considering that the majority of men in the crowd were professing their love to the svelte bleached-blonde, it can only be assumed that Jenny, Jason, Marcie and Don will return to Boston in the near future.
