Boston University has raised $1 billion and surpassed its previous fundraising goal one year early, BU spokesperson Colin Riley confirmed Thursday morning.
The Campaign for BU, launched in September 2012, is part of BU President Robert Brown’s strategic plan, “Choosing to Be Great.” The campaign initially set a goal of raising $1 billion by 2017.
By 2015, the university had raised $888 million through the campaign. The Board of Trustees announced they would expand to a $1.5 billion fundraising campaign, with an end goal of 2019.
BU alumni, current students, parents, philanthropic foundations and corporations have been donating to the fundraiser, which in turn will be used to provide opportunities, fund research, enhance student life and build up BU’s campuses, according to the Campaign for BU website.
