According to Steve MacDonald, a BFD spokesperson, private contractors were digging in the streets when they hit a 6-inch gas line, which caused a leak. Some of the leakage seeped into a couple buildings and basements, and BPD came and evacuated two office buildings.
Once the gas company stops the leak, the street may be reopened and people will be let back into the buildings, and repairs on the pipe may begin, MacDonald said.
