The Boston University community mourns the loss of Kyle Burkey, an undergraduate student who died on June 3.
Burkey, who was from Fairport, New York, studied computer engineering in the College of Engineering, and planned to graduate in the spring of 2019.
He was active in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, playing on the DTD soccer team and once serving as risk management chair on the group’s executive board.
Burkey’s fraternity brothers wrote that he was a well-loved member of DTD.
“He was the kind of kid that could fill an entire room with laughter just by being himself,” Burkey’s former roommate and fellow DTD member Nate Kern wrote in an email.
Burkey’s passion was music, and he enjoyed producing hip hop/rap instrumentals. Trevor Ress, a fellow DTD member wrote in an email that he still has these instrumentals, and that the DTD brothers plan to use one to make a song for Burkey.
“Kyle really demonstrated what fun looked like in Delta Tau Delta,” Ress wrote. “He was a comedian in a way because he knew how to put a smile on your face.”
Kern wrote that Burkey’s death is a loss that the BU community will need time to recover from.
“He was a true friend in every sense,” Kern wrote. “Fun when you needed a great time, a compassionate listener when you had a problem, a great advice giver when you needed a solution, and the perfect person to go to just to know you’re loved. He’ll certainly have an impact on me for the rest of my life and I know I’ll have him everywhere I go.”
