Seven goals in one soccer game? Is that even possible?
The Boston University women’s soccer team proved that it was with its 7-0 rout over Bryant University on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field, continuing its recent offensive surge.
‘We had seven different goal scorers, which I think is tremendous and it’s kind of in the way the season’s gone for us,’ BU coach Nancy Feldman said. ‘We have three or four kids that have been putting in a number of goals, and we have some reserve players that don’t get a lot of playing time but who also find the back of the net. So yeah, definitely a good day.’
BU opened up the scoring in the 19th minute when sophomore Jessica Luscinski passed the ball to senior Farrell McClernon who was in the box to tap it into the open net for her fifth goal of the season.’
McClernon returned the favor six minutes later when, from the right side of Bryant’s defensive third, she delivered a low cross into the box where Luscinski one-timed it into the goal for a 2-0 BU lead.
‘I love it,’ Luscinski said when asked how it is like to play with McClernon. ‘The two goals that we both had together today, we were both in the right spots. We’re clicking, and everything is working out really well for us.’
Feldman also was very pleased with the tandem of Luscinski and McClernon during last night’s game.
‘They are becoming a nice little duo, and that has really developed over the past couple of games,’ she said.’ ‘You could see how happy Farrell was to be able to assist on Jess’ goal. I think they are finding each other. I think they are developing a real chemistry and isn’t that a fun thing to see?”
Last Sunday against the University of Hartford, Luscinski contributed an assist to McClernon’s game-winning goal.’
The Terrier offense would not let up even with a 2-0 lead, scoring five more goals in the remaining 65 minutes of play against the Bulldogs.
BU has now scored 27 goals in its last 10 games, an astonishing feat considering that the team had gone 450 minutes over a span of 16 days without scoring a goal until freshman Megan McGoldrick found the back of the net against Harvard University on Sept. 20.
‘We really connected a lot of passes and found people in the box instead of just kicking it,’ McGoldrick said.
Before the season started, the Terriers set a team objective to score 30 goals this season.’ The Terriers’ seven-goal explosion against Bryant propelled their goal total to 32, with only one game left in the regular season.
Feldman and her team are focused and ready for their game against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Sunday afternoon. If BU wins against UMBC, it will repeat as the America East regular-season conference champion.’
‘We win the game on Sunday and we hoist the regular season trophy,’ Feldman said. ‘We are picked number one, we are the defending champions [and] the target’s on our back all season long. We are in a position to win the regular-season championship and I think that’s a hard thing to do for a third year in a row. To be in that position is a credit to these guys who focus everyday [and] their commitment and their discipline to not take a day off.”
