I applaud Regina Iakupova’s recent letter to the editor (BU Shuttle too crowded, Sept. 7 p.7) commenting on the overcrowding that has become all too common on the Boston University Shuttle. It is imperative that the BU administration address this issue as it raises serious concerns for the safety of the students, faculty and staff that travel on the shuttle each day.
The day on which Regina, myself and many, many other members of the BU community were riding on the shuttle, students were unsafely crowded into every corner of the unfortunate bus. Some were even left behind at the Blanford Street stop. As Regina mentioned, the driver attempted to fit everyone on the bus, but in doing so, crowded the bus to such an extent that it appeared, at least to me, to be unsafe.
The overcrowding on the shuttle is most pronounced during rush hour periods. Perhaps shuttles could run every 15 minutes in the early morning between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and during the late afternoon between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Also, since the shuttles often get caught in traffic especially during the evening rush hour, adding additional service could ameliorate the problem of having to wait over a half an hourfor a bus.
The BU Shuttle is an admirable service to the BU community. However, for the safety of all it is important that additional service be added during peak commute hours.
