As if the joy from just winning the America East Championship wasn’t a gigantic reward in and of itself, six Terriers were honored by America East last Thursday at the league’s field hockey banquet.
Freshman Suus Dekker (six goals) earned the America East Rookie of the Year award and the first of three Terriers named to the All-Conference First Team. Interestingly, Dekker is the third straight Terrier to be named the rookie of the year. Pam Spuehler won in 2004 and Holly Wiles in 2005.
Junior Sarah Shute (14 goals, six assists), the team leader in points, and Spuehler (five goals, six assists) joined Dekker on the All-Conference First Team, while junior back Laura Dean and Wiles (one goal, five assists) were honored with spots on the All-Conference Second Team. In addition to her Rookie of the Year Award, Dekker, along with classmate Haley Robinson, (one goal, one assist) was selected to the All-Rookie Team.
In addition to earning an NCAA Tournament berth, two senior members of the women’s soccer team received another, albeit less spectacular, honor yesterday as goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer and back Erica Lee were named to the America East All-Championship Team. Both were influential components to the now-extended Terrier season that saw the team play to a stellar 13-4-3 record.
Dreyer’s goalkeeper counterpart on the men’s team was also honored by the conference yesterday. Senior Zach Riffett was named to the America East All-Championship Team along with sophomore forward Petur Sigurdsson.
Checking in with another successful fall athletic team, cross country coaches Bruce Lehane and Robyne Johnson were awarded America East Men’s Cross Country Staff of the Year yesterday. Lehane is currently in his 25th season with the Terriers and this marks the eighth time he has won the award. Lehane has coached his teams to 10 conference championships, including an impressive nine-year run spanning from 1989 until 1997.
