n Just a quick note regarding the interesting article, (“Professor brings colorful touch to lessons on ancient tea ritual,” Dec. 6, p. 3).
The last sentence in this article may lead to some confusion. It states in part: “The URA … is looking to start a BU student conference on religion and organize field trips to the nearby Church of Scientology and The Christian Science Monitor.”
To clarify, The Christian Science Monitor is a publication of The Church of Christ, Scientist (Christian Science Church) founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy. Christian Science is a Bible-based, Christian religion. Eddy then started the international daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor in 1908 to combat the yellow journalism of her day and “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind.”
Christian Science (The Church of Christ, Scientist) and Scientology (Church of Scientology) are not related in any way. Scientology was founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950s.
Thanks for making this clarification. It’s wonderful that the Undergraduate Religious Association is offering a variety of activities to promote greater religious and cultural understanding.
