The same arena that has hosted tennis legends from John McEnroe to the Williams sisters during the U.S. Open became the stage for the Boston University’s women’s tennis team this past weekend. The Terriers were part of the East Coast Athletic Conference tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., in one of the few fall season competitions centered on the team’s performance a whole.
Ranked No. 6 out of 16 teams, BU faced the University of Connecticut in the first round. It was the first time the two schools ever played each other.
Juniors Elena de Mendoza and Lindsey Dynof led the way as BU’s first doubles team, winning, 8-1. The second team, comprised of freshmen Zuzana Melicherova and Laura Ahmes, played well, posting an 8-4 victory. These two wins were good enough for a 4-0 victory for the Terriers, and a trip to the second round of the tournament, where they faced Yale University.
With nightfall fast approaching, both BU and Yale agreed to allow only their singles players to play in an effort to save time. In these match-ups, the team that reached four points first would advance to the next round.
Laura Ahmes and Alana Marcu started off well for BU, as each was ahead at some point in the second set. But neither could finish off their opponent, and Yale won, 4-0. With the loss, BU failed to advance to the next round of the tournament.
