I make the trip from my home to Cambridge through the Boston University campus s every weekday on my way to work. Not a morning goes by that I do not see BU students either being blithely oblivious to or flagrantly challenging moving vehicles by crossing the street any time regardless of traffic or signals. As a driver, I understand my obligation to stop for pedestrians, but sometimes it just is not possible.
Recently, I watched as a young woman started across St. Paul Street at Commonwealth Avenue on a stale green light. Cars had already been moving through the intersection, and there were some pedestrians waiting on the other side. She shrugged her shoulders and waded right out, causing several cars to slam on their brakes.
Why don’t BU students get it? They are gambling with their lives by expecting drivers will always stop if they cross on a whim. Please wait for the light.
