The dynamic duo known simply Matt ‘ Kim greeted the audience at the Paradise last Thursday like a group of old friends instead of strangers that paid seventeen dollars for admission.
Accompanied by nothing but a keyboard and a three-piece drum set, the band’s signature sound incorporates a keyboard-synth rhythm that is vaguely reminiscent of an 8-bit track. A powerful base-snare combination packs an additional punch to dancey beats that have the audience swaying their heads and tapping their feet.
Each song was greeted with an unrelenting enthusiasm that surpassed the previous one, causing chaos to permeate every corner of the Paradise walls. In between songs, the band would take a quick breather to make small talk with the crowd, discussing everything from their hometowns to the Red Sox. The crowd erupted in gleeful cries as Matt counted out, “1,2,3,4!” to premise their hit “No More Long Years,” a song that along with “Yea Yeah” has earned Matt ‘ Kim a loyal fanbase across the country.
The duo’s performance showed how far they’ve come since their 2004 self-titled debut. If their successes continue to build, it won’t be surprising if Matt ‘ Kim return to the Paradise in the near future as headliners.
