It was with a great deal of nostalgia that I read about The Daily Free Press’s impending move out of 842 Commonwealth Ave. (“Making an historic move,” Dec. 10, p. 1). As many FreeP alumni can fondly recall, working at the paper often meant literally living there: sleeping on the upstairs couch, eating countless meals at your desk, staying there long after the paper was put to bed to bang out a term paper or class assignment, etc. The place was as much your home as your dorm room or off-campus apartment — except the FreeP had the added bonus of graffiti-stained walls and that lovely retro-wood paneling. (When I was editor we joked about installing a shower upstairs, but worried that no one would ever leave.) No matter what sets up shop in that space after the FreeP’s departure, I’ll still drive by and grin, remembering the long hours, late nights and the many 2 a.m. trips to the Brighton IHOP after putting another issue out the door.
Rest in peace, 842 Commonwealth Ave. Best of luck in your new home.
